My grandmother's parents were Germans from Russia whose ancestors settled in Russia during Catherine the Great's reign. Her ancestors left Germany and arrived in Russia on June 15, 1765, in response to one of Catherine's invitations to come settle in Russia.

Paul I, Tsar of Russia, son of Catherine II, the Great, and Peter III. Peter was Catherine's cousin, and indeed the Holstein-Gottorps intermarried nearly as much as the Hapsburgs. If Paul really was Peter's son, he suffered from a lack of genetic diversity on both sides of the family.
