Old Custom House, rebuilt 2014 is on Gibson Quay at the end of Sewell Street. Built in 1897, this custom house originally faced the river. Import duties were first levied in Hokitika in 1865. By 1867 the revenue of Port Hokitika was second only to Dunedin and ahead of Auckland. That year 216 vessels arrived direct from Australia, making this river harbour the major entry port for the 1866/67 year.
