Through the Redwood Grove - This is either the way to or away from the Hangarua Spring, which I posted a couple of days ago. These are the California Redwoods planted here about 100 years ago – and everything grows really fast in New Zealand, especially it seems, things from California. The path was soft under our feet as we walked – like a carpet, only more magical…

Defiance - Why else would a naked tree be standing out there, in the face of a coming storm?

Misty river morning - Winter has taken on a dreamy surrealistic feel. We've never had more rain than this. Endless pounding of rain on the roof; bending, arching trees; a Y-light you can almost see through to a world that seems almost there. Frozen feet and the electric blanket turned up high... I am so very over it about now, thank you. The solution? Head for the snow - a bit of 'proper' winter always cheers me up!

I caught the moon! In a case of en flagrante dilecto, in what would have been broad daylight… there she was, the moon, a brazen hussy eclipsing the sun in the middle of an otherwise ordinary Wednesday… I know I should have averted my eyes, but I just couldn’t tear myself away – not until it was all over. Whew!

Ngongotaha on Lake Rotorua - This idyllic scene was a few minutes walk from our motel in Ngongotaha (Non-ga-ta-ha – really, it’s easy once you know how!) The lake was a bit rough, which didn’t bother the swans (they are tiny, but just to the left of the yellow buoy) or the trout, which were swimming madly, to the delight of the local fisherpersons. Me, I want this little boat – just a little something to go toodling out for an afternoon’s pleasure… Or – I’ll just be content with this…

Another orchid? Been feeling a little ‘dry’ lately – no flashes of inspiration or unexpected revelations. Going to go with the very safe and lovely cymbidium from the orchid show I went to last week. Went to a great exhibit today, Wildlife Photographer of the Year – very inspirational, but also, sorta puts me in my place because there is no way on earth I’m hopping into Arctic waters in my snorkel gear to get up close and personal with a swimming polar bear. No… not in a hundred lifetimes…

Torch-Painted Tree - This tree was in a dark, pretty much deserted, carpark on Saturday night. There were a few streetlights a few blocks away, but other than the stars, there was no other source of light. I pulled out my tripod and set up my camera and did a long exposure, but the tree was still dark and the street lights were blown out. My husband had just bought a new high-powered torch, and I cajoled him into 'painting' the tree from me while the shutter was open. Not bad, eh?
