Matariki storytelling with frames
Little Kiwi's Matariki is a book all about sharing and celebrating Matariki. We started by reading the book and I then set up an invitation to retell the story. Frames and loose parts are popular at the moment and perfect for storytelling and ephemeral art.

Celebrating Matariki with play
Rather than a mud kitchen I set up a tuff tray for a boil up ( a traditional meal for Maaori) as a way to celebtare matariki. Tip when using a book and water to put it in a zip lock bag to protect it.

Illuminating a story
The lightpad is a fabulous way to bring storytelling to life. During matariki it is darker and the lightpad offers light and play opporotunties for yound children. Loose parts and resources to make kites were provided for this storytelling invitation.

What better way to retell a story about stars than on a lightpad! With loose parts, translucent treasures and 9 wooden stars the children retold the book the stolen stars of Matariki.

Using My Matariki Stories (Aku Paki Matariki) a kete with 3 stories (6 books) in English and te reo Māori that celebrate Matariki I invited children to tell the stories with frames, loose parts and a lightpad. The language and sharing is a great way to celebrate.

I see a suitcase like a large basket for storytelling or small world play. I have used it to support Matariki and one possible story to expalin why there are nine stars of Matariki.

The Matariki stars were brough to life with a little magic (shining a torch to see one of the 9 appear). A simple resource that brough so much joy to the children.

Rata & the waka story basket
Oral story telling is how indigenous cultures passed down how to navigate life, the sea and is a traditional way of teaching and learning. This story basket can be used with or without a book to share tikanga and Kaitiakitanga. Story stones, peg doll, DIY tree from a branch and a felt waka and leaves bring the story to life.

Celebrating Matariki with a story basket
This book and song is beautiful, Tāwhirimātea A Song for Matariki. The story spoons are used by the children to sway to the music and lyrics. They can be used any many whakapapa narratives or as weather spoons.

Understanding culture through books and play
Matariki has many stories that have been handed down and told. Hearing other perspectives and being able to re tell them are two of the things I LOVE about story baskets. Puanga is another star cluster that Māori look to for the start of a new year. This book explains why.
