Rita Angus (NZ 1908-1970), Portrait of Douglas Angus, o/c, 1940. Douglas Angus arrived in Christchurch for a rowing tournament, disappointed to be billeted with his big sister Rita. His attitude changed: “I suddenly saw walking up the platform this most striking person ... it was Rita. I was absolutely amazed ....” A friend watched Rita paint him: “His hair is the most wonderful colour, yellow gold, & Rita has got it perfectly. There is a very great warmth in the whole work.” Pvt. coll.
