Portrait of one of New Zealand's most beautiful birds, the Pukeko. Pukeko is the Maori name for the Purple Swamphen. I've seen a couple of Pukekos near Whatipu, the black sand beach west of Auckland, New Zealand.

The Morepork NZ.  Called after its own call. It eats rats, mice, etc. It is one of the few NZ natives that has benefitted from introduced species. (Did its call come from it learning to ask the early pig hunters for more scraps ?)
