Since the Mission style house originated in California, the style is often called the California Mission style. These houses are easily recognized by the round parapets on the roof that resemble those found on early Spanish colonial churches. A parapet is a low wall projecting from the edge of a platform, terrace, or roof. They are one to two stories, rectangular shaped, and have flat roofs with red tile accents. The exterior walls are adobe or smooth stucco.
