Tegenwoordig zijn er andere alternatieven die zich uitstekend lenen om in wolkvorm te snoeien, zoals : Osmanthus burkwoodii (schijnhulst) : met heerlijk geurende witte bloemen Ilex crenata 'Green Hedge' , 'Stokes' en maximowicziana kanehirae (japanse hulst) : blad zoals buxus Elaeagnus ebbingei (olijfwilg) : glanzend groen blad met zilvergrijze onderkant.
