I pound the pavements of Auckland, exploring its lights and shadows – all in the hope of sharing those few, beautiful, candid and stolen moments. Street photography from Auckland, New Zealand

This is Taika Waititi, director of the movie Boy and general aloofness extraordinaire. He was presenting at the design conference We Can Create. Laughs to be had, stories to be heard, obsessions with swastikas confessed.

“Are you here with the protesters?” I ask him. “Nah, I’m just skateboarding around,” he replies. “It’s pretty sad though what’s happening in Turkey. It’s happening everywhere around the world, isn’t it?” “Yeah I guess.” “We need to do better by the citizens of our countries. The governments need to do better. People need to do better with each other. Yeah.” Auckland New Zealand NZ Street Photography

Caught in the Rain – Nuffield Street, Auckland STREET PHOTOGRAPHY A minute before this photo, and a minute straight after, there was nothing but sunshine. This lady experienced a typical Auckland deluge with much class. Photo notes: Taken on an Olympus OMD EM5 with a Panasonic 25mm f1.4. The angle is all stalkery because it's from the window of my work, one level above the street. You can see my reflection slightly in the bottom of the frame. I quite liked this effect so left it in.

Monk's Stare – The Civic, Auckland I'm not very familiar with my Far Eastern traditions, but I think if a monk stares at you with this level of intensity, you get 6 years of good luck. Or is that 6 years of bad luck... Photo notes: Taken with an Olympus OMD EM5 and a Panasonic 25mm f1.4 lens. Street photography. Black and white.

This is Romeo waiting for his Juliette....or Julian, either way is cool. Photo notes: Taken on an Olympus OMD EM5 with an Olympus 75mm f1.8 lens. This was right after work in Auckland's central business district, so it took a while to wait for the crowds to pass to get a clear shot.
