Empress Zewditu of Ethiopia (1876-1930). She was empress of Ethiopia fromm 1916 to 1930. The first female head of an internationally recognized state in Africa in the 19th and 20th centuries, and the first Empress regnant of the Ethiopian Empire perhaps since the legendry Makeda, the Queen of Sheba. Empress Zewditu was succeeded on the throne by Negus Tafari, who took the name of Emperor Haile Selassie.
