This view was taken from one of the empty clock dial windows of the old market hall during its erection in about 1868. The spire of St. Mary's Church is in the centre and just to the right the Salop Infirmary. Below the spire is the water tower situated between St. Mary's St. and Butcher Row. The reservoir was able to hold 25,300 gallons of water pumped up from the Severn at Coton Hill.

Coleham is one of the oldest parts of Shrewsbury, and the name itself is almost certainly of Saxon origin. A number of 16th Century cottages survive today behind later frontages and are seen at the right end of the row shown in this Phipson watercolour of 1906. The cottages nearer to the artist were finally removed in the 1960s.
