Phorusrhacos longissimus: A giant flightless bird in Miocene Patagonia. It stood about 8 ft tall and weighed approximately 290 lbs. The large hooked beak and strong claws suggest they were carnivorous. (Antarctic Spring)

Titanis walleri, a species of Phorusrhacid, is the only known “terror bird” from S. America to island hop into N. America about 2.5 million years ago. It was 8 ft (2.5 m) tall and weighed about 330 lb (150 kg). It went extinct during the early Pleistocene, and fossil evidence has been found in Florida and in Texas. (Zdenek Burian)
