Kushner's paintings achieved their mature style in the late 1980s when the artist began to focus upon the theme of flowers. These paintings employed gold and other metal leaf, a fractured, almost cubist space, and a loose or free use of pattern that recalls the work of Matisse, who Kushner has cited as his single greatest influence.
