Maori Design Influences (Cultural)

A look at traditional and modern Maori art and design and how this influences modern art, tattoos, fashion and sugar craft. In particular looking at the Koru design and flax weaving and how these have been incorporated into designs for celebration cakes.

The Taiaha is a traditional close combat, hand held Maori Weapon carved in the form of an ancestor.  In Maori Weapons the tongue represents oratory skills, the eyes to keep alert, and the feathers adorn the head to distract opponents. It is branded and commonly known as Te Papa and Our Place; "Te Papa Tongarewa" is broadly translatable as "the place of treasures of this land".

Koru - a symbol of Maori art mimicking the   fiddlehead of new ferns.  It symbolizes new life, growth, development, and   peace.  The circular shape of the koru helps to convey the idea of perpetual   movement while the inner coil suggests a return to the point of   origin.
