This "People We Care About" theme unit links the concept of caring for others to Valentine's Day and valentines, at a level appropriate for early learners. This is the 4th pack in a comprehensive study of Valentine's Day for early learners, and would also work well as a stand alone lesson plan. Center – alphabet upper and lower case matching – match 2 halves of heart together. Includes a picture for initial sound for each letter. Center – match 10-frame flashcards with sets of hearts to 10. Pre-writing practice – trace lines and shapes to people we care about (2) Arrange cut and paste sentence – “I love my family”. Center – sort cookies onto plates – small, medium, large. 6-piece puzzle of a Valentine bouquet. Print 2 copies on cardstock, cut up one and match to the other. Decorate a poster of friends that says: “Love is in the air …” Set of 8 b/w cards showing different Valentine’s themed children. Use the cards to make matching and concentration games (2 copies), and for storytelling and role playing.
