The neighborhood of Henie Hills, Oceanside was built in 1939 just after the Great Depression. Sonja Henie, an Olympic skating medalist and movie star, decided to purchase about 1,600 acres of prime coastal land. Though at first it was a retreat for her friends and colleagues, so much interest rose that that she began developing homes and selling them.
With its jet-black shore, lapis lazuli waters, and thick, jungle-like foliage, Honokalani Beach is a photographer’s dream. Besides lying lazily on the “sand”—actually made up of of tiny lava pebbles—there’s plenty to do: you’ll find seaside lava tubes and sea caves carved into the lava cliffs along the shore.
