The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, located in northern Wisconsin, was originally named "Chequamegon" (a Chippewa Indian word) by early French fur traders. The park, which consists of 22 islands in Lake Superior and 2,500 acres of peninsula, is characterized by sandstone cliffs formed by Ice Age glaciers.
