The T'boli is an indigenous tribe from the highlands near Lake Sebu, South Cotabato in Mindanao. They have a rich heritage in music, dance and story-telling. Mindanao is the second largest and southernmost island in the Philippines.
The Pahiyas Festival is one of my favorite paintings from one of my favorite contemporary artists, Manuel Baldemor. It captures the Filipino 'sense of space' where all space is occupied with objects, as one might see in a Filipino house, w/c is the way Filipinos also relate with each other -- close connections --a sense of community and multitude. Also, the Filipino sense of vibrant colors as shown in photos of the actual fiesta (see my post "Pahiyas Festival" on this same board).
