The New York Public Library has a collection of 20,000 maps online. It's an invaluable resource, particularly when I want to see what the borders, cities, etc., looked in the past. Genealogists know that names for places can change, and if an ancestor appears to disappear, it often means you should check the dates and the maps. And if you're like me, you love maps because they are maps, and you just want to lose yourself in them. (And, yes, I have a geography/demography background.)
