The Hygrocybe persistens is fairly rare mushroom in the Netherlands, growing in scanty grasslands, roadsides and grassy areas in the dunes. It is a golden-yellow mushroom, both cap and stem, with pale yellow gills. Its distinctive umbo probably explains the Dutch name 'pointed hat waxcap'. The spangle waxcap is a similar mushroom found in the same habitat and is also a rare fungus.
