Zoot Suit Riots, Los Angeles, June 3, 1943, Between young Mexican men known as pachucos, and American servicemen. On June 7 military authorities stepped in to handle the situtation. Navy and Army commanders ordered that the City of Los Angeles be declared off-limits to military personal. The official Navy position was that their sailors were acting in "self-defense against the rowdy element."

The Zoot Suit Riots were a series of riots in 1943 that exploded in Los Angeles, California, between white sailors & Marines stationed throughout the city & Latino youths, who were recognizable by the zoot suits they favored. Mexican Americans & military servicemen were the main parties in the riots & some African American & Filipino/Filipino youth were involved. The incident triggered attacks against Latinos in Beaumont, TX, Chicago, San Diego, Detroit, Evansville, Philadelphia & NY.
