A corner of a raised bed in my vegetable garden. Can't wait until this beautiful purple kale is big enough to play with the California poppies huddled around him. A big clump of purple blooming chives is to the right of this picture.
Here is the bed in its first year July '11. Backbone shrubs are still growing so annuals and specimen perennials need to fill in. Will pin ideas for 2012 here. Colors are deep purple, silver/gray, pale pink, and pale lemon yellow.
Nepeta 'Walker's Low' (catmint) is flowering in front of Centaurea montana 'Amethyst Dream' and the purple foliage of Penstemon 'Mystica'. Caryopteris incana 'Sunshine Blue', Deschampsia flexuosa 'Tatra Gold' (wavy hair grass), and Euphorbia polychroma provide the chartreuse foliage.
Trollius chinensis 'Golden Queen' Globe Flower, It blooms from early to midsummer. Plant in full to partial shade. They take a year or two to become established but are well worth the wait. Plant along edges or streams. Grows 24-36 inches tall and can get 18-24 inches wide. If foliage begins to look worn after flowering cut back hard and wait for new growth to fill back in, it may take awhile to come back. If dividing do so in early spring or fall. Zone 3-7
