Eel Grass (Zostera marina), ts’aay’imts, candy of the sea. A marine flowering plant, exposed at extreme low tide. In the early spring (May), gather eelgrass covered in herring spawn. Dried the roe-covered seagrasses on the beach, later rehydrating with water. Fall gather eelgrass rhizomes, the root-like stem. This crisp, sweet and salty treat is high in carbohydrates and sugar. Roasted in ashes peeled, starchy center eaten.
