1937 - This is a scene from "Richard II" at the Queen's Theatre with John Gielgud as Richard and Peggy Ashcroft as the Queen. It was unusual to see Shakespeare in the West End as producers were not convinced that the plays would attract audiences and were reluctant to take financial risks.

2000 - Ralph Fiennes as "Richard II" for the Almeida Theatre's production (c. Ivan Kynel); he also played "Coriolanus" during the same season, a play which he went on to direct into a film in 2011, as well as reprising the title role. Ralph featured in over 10 RSC productions between 1988-2003, whilst his brother Joseph (also featured in our exhibition) starred in several RSC shows between 1995-97
