In Turkey, Mosque Gets A Woman's Touch

Plan of Hagia Sohpia, Constantinople (Istanbul) (532 - 537 AD) - Domed nave flanked by 2 semi-domes, makes it both linear in plan and square overall. A structural feat in Architecture - Loads are tranferred from the dome and pendentives to the buttresses, and from their to four stone piers, which are themselves buttressed. The semi-domes contribute little the the stability (firmitas) of the building, instead contributing to the 'vestuvas', by providing a linear plan within a square.
