Dauphin County, PA Softwood Dower Chest. : Lot 737

Pennsylvania, probably Dauphin County, painted blanket chest, ca. 1795, the ends decorated with floret and tulip stenciled ovals, the front with similarly decorated panels with central red and green stars flanking a stylized heart, all on an intricately stenciled ground, the interior is fitted with a till and serpentine wrought iron hinges, 22 1/2" h., 51" w., 23" d.

Birth and Baptismal Certificate Fraktur, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, initialed and dated "G & T" and "1815," water and ink drawing with a shield and double eagle, inscription enclosed in a heart surrounded by vining flowers and leaves, all in red, light blue, and black, (toning, creases), image 12 1/2 x 15 1/2, in a grained frame, 17 1/4 x 20 1/4 in. overall.

Birth and Baptismal Certificate Fraktur, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, initialed and dated "G & T" and "1815," water and ink drawing with a shield and double eagle, inscription enclosed in a heart surrounded by vining flowers and leaves, all in red, light blue, and black, (toning, creases), image 12 1/2 x 15 1/2, in a grained frame, 17 1/4 x 20 1/4 in. overall.

FRAKTUR. Hand painted by Christian Mertel, a school master in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania ca. 1770 - 1800. The tall, castle like buildings with arched windows are typical of his work. Salmon pink and green watercolor buildings, crowned lions with human faces, an American eagle and an angel with inked text for the birth and baptism of George Stober, born November 21, 1800 in York County, Pennsylvania. circa 1st quarter of the 19th century, single door with six panes in original polychrome painted finish with circles, upside down pineapples and pinwheels, old "Sotheby's Sale #5534" printed label on top; Cupboard sold as part of the collection of Don and Faye Walters and attributed to the Mahantango Valley of Pennsylvania. Sale date 10-25-86  29 x 18 x 34.25" high.
