Virginia Apgar was born June 7, 1909 in Westfield , New Jersey. In the late 1940s Apgar began developing the scoring system for newborn evaluation that bears her name; she presented the system at a meeting on September 21, 1952, & published it the following year.
Apgar holds a newborn baby upside-down to test its reflexes, as part of an Apgar evaluation, at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. Reflex irritability--in response to tickling the nostrils or gently slapping the feet--is one of the five Apgar score criteria. Title: National Foundation-March of Dimes.
