This is my Found Poetry lesson from my Poetry Unit for Interactive Notebooks for older students. Found Poetry requires students to look through an existing text and create a poem using selected words and phrases in the order that they appear. I use Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and Frankenstein by Mary Shelley for this lesson, but you can use any text. (grades 7-10)
Get students to love poetry with bellringers! Each bellringer exposes students to a short classic poem or part of a poem to increase enthusiasm, confidence, and intrigue. Students complete a variety of tasks over the course of a unit instead of beating a poem to death. Read more strategies for using these bellringers on teachnouvelle.com.
A Writer's Workshop model can be a great way to engage students in the writing and revising process. Writing a short story will help students strengthen their understanding of the elements of fiction, develop analytical skills, and give helpful peer feedback.
