"Russian folk art" Alongside the Russian gift for story telling is a talent for illustration, often used to decorate handicrafts such as boxes, eggs and trays. The firebird which appears in two of the images above is an important motif in Russian art and features in many fairy tales. It is symbolic of light and it is said that when one feather from the tail of the firebird falls to the ground, a new artistic tradition is born, hence why it is such a popular motif amongst artists.
