Greifswald, Germany - Kloster Eldena by zug55, via Flickr. Ruins of Eldena monastery which was founded in 1199 by Cistercian monks. The monastery was heavily damaged by Wallenstein's troups in the Thirty Years War (1618-48) and has been withering away ever since. The ruins have claimed late fame because they inspired the romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840).
