The genus Homo owned what no apes owned--the ability to make and use complex tools. A key feature of the modern human hand is on the third metacarpal; it is a tiny projection of bone that "helps the metacarpal lock into the wrist, helping the thumb and fingers apply greater amounts of pressure to the wrist and palm." Such was found in northern Kenya near the sites where were unearthed the earliest complex stone tools (e.g., rough hand axes and cleavers) said to date from 1.8 million years…

Rough axes and other tools thought to be between 130,000 and 700,000 years old were found close to shelters on the south coast of the Mediterranean island of Crete. Crete has been separated from the mainland of Greece for about five million years, so whoever made the tools must have travelled there by sea, a distance of at least 40 miles. The previous earliest evidence was of sea travel was 60,000 years ago; in Greece it was 11,000 years ago.
