I have finally read this book (recommended by everybody, it seems!) and it is one of those special books that stays with you long after you've finished it. Read it and spread the word!!! Set in England and the Channel Islands in 1946; just after WWII ended. The story is told through notes & letters between a writer in London & her friends, and between her and the inhabitants of Guernsey; an island occupied by the Nazis during the war.
Lillian Leyb travels to America alone, hoping to create a new life for herself after losing her family back in Russia, but when she learns her daughter may be alive, Lillian embarks on a journey that takes her around the world in search of love and redemption.
I haven’t read a book this creepy, violent, or disturbing in a long time. A.M. Homes is, quite possibly, the most fearless writer I have ever read and The End of Alice is a book that is both horrifying and beautiful.
