After a brief farewell to her weeping ladies & a request for prayers, she kneeled down & one of her ladies tied a blindfold over her eyes. . She knelt upright, in the French style of executions. A portrait by Michel Sittow traditionally said to depict a young Katherine of Aragon. Katherine was the first wife of Henry VIII and had previously been married to his brother, Arthur, Prince of Wales until his premature death in 1502. Her first marriage became the subject of controversy when Henry wished to repudiate her. Despite several pregnancies, Katherine’s only surviving child was a daughter Mary who became England’s first crowned Queen Regnant.
