CR Patterson, an ex-slave, and his family were the 1st to build automobiles... before the T-Model Ford. They called their line "Patterson-Greenfield".   The Pattersons of Greenfield, Ohio, were an African-American family who manufactured automobiles, buses, and trucks starting with a horse-drawn carriages in the 1860s.   The family was established by Charles Richard Patterson, a blacksmith who escaped from slavery in West Virginia just before the Civil War by running away to freedom in Ohio.
