Airtam Frieze lute. Lute player, Bactria, Kushan period, approximately 1st century AD. Excavated from Airtam, Termez, southern Uzbekistan and now in the Hermitage Museums, Saint Petersburg. This instrument has four moon-shaped soundholes. It is being played like a citole, an instrument it predates by almost a thousand years.
