Melrose Plantation Natchitoches, Louisiana ca. 1796 This is the oldest surviving dwelling in the United States built by and for free blacks. It is also one of the oldest buildings in Louisiana. The famous African House on the grounds of the Melrose plantation, has features reminiscent of the construction found in West African villages. The Metoyers were free people of color for four generations before the American Civil War.
