Ghirardelli Square | though the company's HQ decamped to San Leandro, their name still looms above Fisherman's Wharf and their chocolate is found just about everywhere. The grand master of San Francisco chocolate was Domenico Ghirardelli, who was born near Genoa, Italy, in 1817. His family imported exotic foods, and at a young age he started apprenticing with a candy maker.
ANCIENT. During the late 19th century San Francisco continued to develop. The first cable car was tested in Clay Street in 1873. In 1870 San Francisco had a population of almost 150,000. By 1900 San Francisco had a population of over 300,000.
