Maui's dolphin or popoto. Population 50. Only found off the northwest coast of NZ's North Island. The world's rarest and smallest dolphin. Short snout, round dorsal fin. Generally found close to shore in groups or pods of several dolphins and can live up to 20 years. Drown after becoming trapped in heavy duty nylon fishing mesh and fewer than 22 breeding females are left in the world. Info at ARA site at Muriwai Beach.
