Congratulations to Julio Orlando Cúmez Nicho of Chimaltenango, Guatemala, selected as 1 of the 20 international winners in the 2014 Global Dialogues contest for his story entitled “Ixchel’s Identity”. Julio’s narrative highlights the importance of not giving in to pressures to surrender one’s selfhood. Nancy moved the jury with her fictional story about incest, recounted in her own unique, poetic style. Hanif, as his friends and family call him, impressed the jurors with his fictional story, “Bagas’ Tears”, which is about a little boy trying to make sense of the absence of a father in his life, coercion at school and what his mother does. www.globaldialogues.org
