Jim Pierson Beckwourth, American fur trapper, mountain man and explorer. Born into slavery, he later moved to the American west where he lived with the Crow for years. He is credited with discovering the Beckwourth Pass through the Sierra Nevada during the gold rush years and improving the Beckwourth Trail which thousands of Americans followed to California.
A Mormon immigrant company under direction of Samuel Brannan departed on the ship Brooklyn from New York on 4 February 1846 en route to the Great Salt Lake valley via California. The group under the direction of Brannan navigated the southern tip of South America around Cape Horn and arrived at Yerba Buena on 31 July 1846. . He is considered the first publicist of the California Gold Rush and was its first millionaire.
