Ooh, good reference diagram. I am proud to brag that I have mastered all but the closed blanket stitch. It warn't easy, and I learned the hard way to use threads with better contrast than just light and dark shades of the same color for a sampler. Doh!
The cool thing about this flower is that each spoke is not just a straight stitch, it is a long and skinny chain stitch. Once the whipping is done, the sides of each chain are pulled together to form the diamonds at the top. This is from Jane Nicholas' book Stumpwork Embroidery.
