19-year old Yorkshire girl Anita Lonsbrough won gold in the 200m breaststroke at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, setting a new World record. In 1962 she won gold at the European championships in Leipzig, three golds at the Perth Commonwealth Games, and was the first woman to become BBC Sports Personality Of The Year. In 1964 in Tokyo she carried the flag at the head of the British Olympic team (and also met her future husband, track cyclist Hugh Porter).
