King Paul of Greece performs the Greek Orthodox tradition of holding crowns over the heads of his daughter, Princess Sophia, and her husband, Prince Juan Carlos of Spain, during their wedding ceremony on May 14, 1962.
The diamond floral tiara presented by General Franco of Spain to Princess Sofia when she wed Juan Carlos in 1962 has a longer history than first thought. It was made by the English jewellers JPCollins in 1879, at the behest of King Alfonso XII for his bride, Archduchess Maria Cristina of Austria.
Juan Carlos was married in Athens at the Church of Saint Dennis on 14 May 1962, to Princess Sophia of Greece and Denmark, daughter of King Paul. She was Greek Orthodox but converted to Roman Catholicism in order to become Spain's queen. Her name is now styled as Queen Sofia.
