4th - Nutcrackers. I showed my 4th graders how to draw the simple shapes that make up the nutcrackers. Then I asked them to decorate the nutcrackers they drew by adding their own details. We talked about the element of design, value and how it makes things in art work look real. I showed them techniques that they could use with oil pastels to create value in their art work.

This was a fun and easy lesson I did with my 1st grade class.  I think that oil pastels are my new favorite material.  I love the way they blend and mix together.  I allowed the students to make their own types of backgrounds.  Hint:  WORK LIGHT TO DARK!  I used yellow/orange pastel first and traced the inside left sides of the ovals on the left.  Then I traced the inside right of the ovals on the right.  Then I colored all the ovals orange.  Finally I used a red/orange pasted and traced…
