There is a reoccurring motif in “The house on Mango Street” with women in windows. Esperanza's great grandmother sat in a window her entire life, trapped. Similar to women like Mamacita, Rafaela, Minerva, and Sally in the neighborhood who are trapped by their fathers, husbands, and children. Suffering emotionally and physically; they look out the window down the road all day. Looking down the road symbolizes hope, hope that they can escape Mango Street and the stigma carried with it.
