Traditional houses in Singapore. Built by the Peranakan community, these houses employ elements of traditional Chinese, Malay and western architecture. The houses present a narrow face to the road - a little plaque on a nearby building states that this was because the property tax applied to such buildings in Malacca were based on the size of frontage. So the frontage shrank and the houses became very deep instead. This architectural practice then spread to Singapore and Penang.
