This is a subject that has long been seen through a feminist prism, almost as a forced emancipation of women, who emerged from the war empowered, self-confident and independent. In Germany, indeed, it became known as the Stunde der Frauen (Hour of the Women) and its most visible symbols were the lines of women who cleared the rubble from the bombed-out city streets.
