Chicago World's Fair The center of the Columbian Exposition of 1893 was an architectural wonder known as the Court of Honor. It featured Venice-like waterways and a collection of stately palaces that served as exhibition halls. The buildings were known as the "White City" because of the white, stucco exteriors and how the area glowed by street lights at night. The Palace of Fine Arts later became the Museum of Science and Industry.
