Salmon Chase, our 6th Chief Justice, was an Ohioan, a prominent Lincoln-era Republican, and a powerful advocate for fugitive slaves' rights. He presided as the first black attorney argued before the Supreme Court. and at Andrew Johnson's impeachment. John Niven's "Salmon P. Chase: A Biography" is the best solo bio on him, but "Team of Rivals" tells his story rather well, too.

"A Matter of Life and Death" - I've always loved this film starring David Niven and directed by Powell and Pressburger. The Guardian's summary: "A world war two pilot (David Niven) miraculously escapes death after baling out of a burning plane. TA celestial court is set up to judge his case while Niven hangs in limbo between a Technicolor earth and a monochrome heaven."
