When I made the sauce, I used only 2 tablespoons of flour.  I think you should have a 1:1 ratio of butter and flour when making a rue.  I also didn't have aged cheddar so I used a four cheddar blend.  We thought I should have blanched the asparagus because it was a bit stiff for us.  We gave it a C.
